Buddhist Manuscript Markup Workshop
Here are slideshows (.odp), images (.jpg and .tif), markup (.xml), stylesheet (.xsl) and schema (.rnc) samples for a workshop on the scholarly markup of Buddhist manuscripts. You will need:
- An XML editor. I recommended Oxygen, but any dedicated xml-editor that can validate against a Relax NG schema and perform a XSLT (2.0) transform will do.
- The HTML output of the transform is tested only in Firefox, but should work in any browser.
- Open Office to read the slideshows.
- If time allows we might use the Image Markup Tool by Martin Holmes.
As preparation for the workshop you might want to read Chapter 10. (Manuscript Description) and 11. (Representation of Primary Sources) of the TEI guidelines.
The examples used here are two Dunhuang Mss containing parts of the Shorter Chinese Saṃyukta Āgama (別譯雜阿含經 T.100).
- BD (Beijing Dunhuang) 6776 is a short fragment of T.100. It contains the final part of Sutra 31, Sutra 32, and the Uddana for sutras 23-32.
- P (Pelliot) 2301 is an excerpt of some sutras of T.100. It is described in Pelliot's Catalog.
Happy encoding!
